SIGNED, NEPAL is one of many creative organisations born in the midst of 2020-21's global COVID-19 pandemic. Our mission is to find and exhibit Nepali creatives. We’re looking for photography and writing from Nepali creatives around the world.
A note from anisha
After finishing a BA in English with Creative Writing, during the COVID lockdown, I was developing my writing portfolio. Most of the pieces centre around race, identity and the Nepali community in London. Whilst researching and pursuing inspiration, I successfully found Indian, Pakistani and Bengali influences. I struggled finding anything solely-Nepali, (or Nepali with accompanying English translation(s)).
Through no fault of my own, thinking back to what artistic forms I was exposed to as a mixed-race Nepali child in London, the majority of what I absorbed came from Hindi channels, like Zee TV, which is owned by Essel Group, an Indian conglomerate. Other art absorption largely came from Bollywood, the Indian Hindi-language film industry.
When I think of South Asian art, I think of India's glamorous Bollywood scene and contemporary artists such as Anish Kapoor and others featured in this article. I also think of Rupi Kaur, Bend it Like Beckham (2002), My Beautiful Laundrette (1985) and directors such as Mira Nair.
I'm committed to transforming SIGNED, NEPAL into a dedicated and inclusive platform, which will continue to thrive and show the world the works of Nepali creatives.
Signed,
